Annual event raises cash for Africa

Students and staff at Swansea College are getting ready for their annual Kenya Project Day on 18th March.

Every year, the college holds a day of fun and fund-raising for Madungu Primary School.

Kicking off with a performance of African song and dance, the event will also include contributions from Craig Y Nos and Glyncollen Primary Schools and musical pieces from students. There will also be a sponsored walk to Mumbles and back, with many participants in fancy dress.

The student-run Kenya Project initiative aims to raise money to maintain a feeding programme for over 120 of the poorest pupils at Madungu as well as paying the salaries of two teachers and supplying them with a variety of educational materials.

“The Wales/Africa connection has been strengthened even further following our visit to Madungu last summer, when we could see how all the money we’ve raised over the years has been put to such good use,” says lecturer Pat Reid.

In addition to the special day, further fund-raising will take place at the weekend when a team of staff and students undertake a 40-mile sponsored walk at Cannock Chase.

“The walk must be completed in 19 hours, so it’s a real test of endurance,” adds Pat.
