Swansea College is set to host the regional final of the prestigious Worldskills UK Industrial Electronics competition next week.
Eight competitors - four of whom are currently studying at the Tycoch campus - will be put through their paces during the intense two-day competition which is organised by fforwm, Semta and UK Skills.
The Worldskills UK Industrial Electronics Competition tests the students' knowledge of practical circuit construction and theoretical analysis skills. The highest scoring competitors from the regional heat will be invited to the UK final in Bolton in July.
A theory test will be followed by a six hour practical session designed to highlight the students' design, fault finding and assembly skills. For this practical part of the competition, students will be provided with the required tools such as a working bench, multi meter, soldering iron, cutters and pliers and will be expected to use their skills to complete a set piece of work within the allotted timeframe.
"We are really pleased to be acting as host college for the regional final of this fantastic competition," says Curriculum Team Leader Steve Williams. "Among the competitors this year are some of our best electronics students. Participating in this event will be a fantastic experience for them and a great addition to their CVs."
The difficult task of judging the competition will fall to a panel of experts drawn from industry and education.
