Students quiz community leaders Training and Education Pictures

Swansea College students have enjoyed some "face to face" time with local Councillors as part of Local Democracy Week.

A 'political speed dating' session took place at the Tycoch campus with four elected members Cllr Veronyca Bates-Hughes, Cllr Rene Kinzett, Cllr Darren Price and Cllr Prof. Paul Meara.

Students from the Welsh Baccalaureate and International Baccalaureate courses were able to ask questions about any aspect of community life from education and the environment to culture, sport, crime and health.

The political speed dating event was great fun for our students and is an unusual and informal way for them to engage with the democratic process, meeting with local decision makers on a one-to-one basis to discuss the issues that matter to them, says Director of A Levels and the Arts Nick Brazil.

The students taking part in the political speed dating event were Nageena Ali, Amy Morgan, Arwel Morgan, Lauren Jones, Shahirah Miah, Tazkia Rashid, Jade Probert, Jayne Horswill, Sam Phillipart, Jodie Palmer, Diana Diminsecu, Jonathan Shefford, Richard Englert, Cadi Cliff and Alex Benjamin.

The format of the event followed that of a standard 'speed dating' session with students spending just three minutes with each Councillor before having to move onto the next.

The concept of 'political speed dating' was originated by the Local Government Association's LD05 campaign team and Solent People?s Theatre.
