Awards boost for local charities

A RECORD amount of money was raised for local charities at last year's (2008) Swansea Bay Woman of the Year awards.

Despite the credit crunch, guests at the event raised ٟ,574 for the Swansea Charity Partnership (SCP).

The partnership includes charities such as Local Aid for Children, Community Special Needs, Women's Aid, Age Concern and Swansea Community Farm.
Rosa Fernandez, partner of awards sponsors John Collins and Partners, said: "The Swansea Bay Woman of the Year is a hugely important event for Swansea.

"Of course, the main aim of the awards is to recognise the outstanding work that women do in different sectors throughout the Swansea Bay area.
"But there is also the charitable aspect of the event, which often goes unnoticed.

"It's fantastic that people have been so generous."This is the biggest sum raised at the awards to date."Denise Hughes, of the SCP, said: "The member charities of the SCP work with some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our community.

"Each year, more than 20,000 people in our community benefit from our services. Support like this helps us continue with our efforts to make Swansea a better place.

"I would like to thank all the guests for the fantastic sum that they raised for us this year. "Our member charities are delighted."
